Understanding Social Sharing

To spread the word about activities on your site, you can strategically place special Social Sharing opportunity components on your site Web pages that your constituents can use to quickly and easily post comments to their social site that contains a link back to the appropriate site page.

This extends the current Tell-A-Friend email functionality that your constituents can use to email their friends about a specific page on your site.

And, if Open Authentication is also enabled for the same service providers, your constituents can be logged into their social media account from their Convio account to make it easier and faster to post their links.

The appropriate information for each constituent is accessed and validated using application programming interfaces (APIs) created and maintained by the service connection company Gigya. You must create a free Gigya account for your organization and accept their terms of service.

In addition to the Gigya API and Secret keys associated with your Gigya account, there are API, secret, or consumer keys to connect to the social networking site. Gigya issues these keys as part of the Gigya configuration process, but you can record these keys on your Convio-powered site for safekeeping.

Understanding the Social Sharing Opportunity Component

The Social Sharing Opportunity component can be placed on any page in your site for your constituent to share with their friends. You can place it on the welcome or greeting pages in the different areas of your site; confirmation pages (like the pages that display after your constituents make a donation or register for a team fundraiser event); and the default personal pages used by your volunteer fundraising participants and champions.

The component displays the list of available social sites for posting. The post itself will contain the information allowed by the site, including a link back to another page (for example, the first page of the donation form instead of the confirmation page where the component resides).

A default Social Sharing Opportunity typically has a string of supported social site icons (like Social Tell-A-Friend Email IconFacebook IconLinkedIn IconTwitter Icon) prefaced with a phrase like Share With Friends In.

The corresponding default post to a Facebook page may look similar to the following.

The Sample Share page is included in the component configuration pages to show where each configuration option displays on the social site posts.
